What is LEV?

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is equipment designed to extract airborne particulate, such as dust, fume, and oil mist, from production environments.

Why is LEV important?

LEV is an HSE requirement, as outlined in COSHH Regulations 2002 (as amended) and HSG258 guidelines.

Every employer shall ensure that the exposure of his employees to substances hazardous to health is either prevented or, where this is not reasonably practicable, adequately controlled…

COSHH Regulation 7.1

Uncontrolled contaminants can cause long-term, irreversible health conditions, or can even be carcinogenic.

What is an LEV test?

LEV testing is a legal requirement and must be carried out by a competent person at least every 14 months. Some processes, such as metal grinding, require more frequent testing.

…the employer shall ensure that thorough examination and testing of those controls is carried out… …in the case of local exhaust ventilation plant, at least once every 14 months… COSHH Regulation 9.2

LEV testing includes:

  • Thorough visual and structural examination, measuring the control effectiveness of your LEV systems.
  • Measurement of technical performance.
  • Assessment of control effectiveness.
  • The issuance of comprehensive reports and compliance labels.
Who can install LEV?

HSG258 stipulates that LEV must be installed and maintained by a ‘competent’ person. Routes to becoming professionally competent include qualifications through BOHS, CIBSE and ILEVE. McCarthy Environmental engineers are suitably qualified through BOHS through a range of courses:

  • Thorough Examination and Testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems P601
  • Basic Design Principles of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems P602
  • Performance Evaluation, Commissioning and Management of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems P604
What LEV do I need?

The short answer is that it depends on the types of materials that are processed. Each material type will have a maximum Work Exposure Limit outlined in HSE’s EH40/2005 guidance. This will influence the type of extraction hood that can be used. Fumes or light particulate may be suited to an extraction arm, whereas a highly carcinogenic material will require a fully enclosed booth and a suitable filtration system. Our project engineers will design your LEV system, starting from the point of capture to the duct system required, the fan, and any filtration that is required. At this point we can recommend which systems and solutions will work for your application. To get started, contact us to arrange a site survey.
